Methods and apparatus for use in quantifying components in a liquid sample, for example, white blood cells in blood. The invention provides a microscope slide for such use having at least one adhesive matrix, which is soluble in the liquid sample having components to be quantified, affixed to the operative face of the slide, and a plurality of substantially spherical beads of uniform diameter made of a substantially non-compressible material located within the adhesive matrix. A counting chamber is provided when a cover slip is provided with the slide. The invention further provides a stirring rod for use in quantifying components in a liquid sample having an adhesive matrix over one end portion, the adhesive matrix being analogous to the adhesive matrix on the microscope slide described above. The adhesive matrix or matrix can consist of a solid residue of dried liquid, and the liquid can be a hemolysing solution if the equipment is to be used for counting white blood cells. A standard microscope slide is provided by the invention when the adhesive matrix made of a solid residue of dried hemolysing solution, also contains a known number of control particles, treated so as not to lyse in the presence of the hemolysing solution and shaped and sized so as to simulate human white blood cells. Methods for preparing this apparatus, using mixtures of adhesive liquids and beads, are also provided. Furthermore, methods of quantifying components in liquid samples using the apparatus described above are provided. Generally, the methods consist of either placing a liquid sample on the adhesive matrix of the microscope slide and mixing it so that the matrix dissolves in the sample, or placing a liquid sample on an unprepared microscope slide and stirring it with the stirring rod having the adhesive matrix over one tip so that at least a portion of the adhesive matrix dissolves therein. A cover slip is then placed over the sample so that the cover slip rests on the beads and is spaced from the slide by a known distance determined by the diameter of the beads. The counting chamber provided thereby is placed under a microscope and the components in a known volume of sample are counted, wherein the known volume is determined by measuring the viewing area of the microscope and multiplying the viewing area by the distance between the slide and cover slip as determined by the diameter of the beads.
