The invention addresses the problem of artifact ghost peaks which can sometimes arise in mass spectrometers that employ a quadrupole rod set for both trapping and mass analyzing the trapped ions. The problem arises as a result of randomly distributed voltage gradients along the length of the rods. Three solutions are presented. The first approach involves improving the conduction characteristics of the rod sets. The second approach involves the application of at least one continuous axial DC field to the trapping quadrupole rod set in order to urge ions towards a pre-determined region of the trap, thereby avoiding voltage gradients. Another approach involves the application of one or more discrete axial fields to create one or more potential barriers along the axial dimension of the trap (in addition to the barriers used to initially trap the ions). These barriers prevent ions of differing voltage gradients from equilibrating with one another.
La présente invention permet de résoudre le problème des artéfacts de pics fantômes qui peuvent parfois se présenter dans les spectromètres de masse qui font appel à un ensemble de barreaux quadripolaire à la fois pour le piégeage et pour l'analyse de masse des ions piégés. Le problème découle de gradients de tension dont la distribution est aléatoire sur la longueur des barreaux. L'invention apporte trois solutions au problème précité. La première approche consiste à améliorer les caractéristiques de conduction des ensembles de barreaux. La seconde approche consiste à appliquer au moins un champ c.c. axial continu à l'ensemble de barreaux quadripolaire de piégeage afin de pousser les ions vers une région prédéterminée du piège, évitant de la sorte les gradients de tension. Une autre approche consiste à appliquer un ou plusieurs champs axiaux discrets afin de créer une ou plusieurs barrières potentielles le long de la dimension axiale du piège (en plus des barrières utilisées pour le piégeage initial des ions). Ces barrières permettent d'empêcher les ions aux gradients de tension différents de s'équilibrer entre eux.
