A coal-fired combustion plant is provided. The coal-fired combustion plant includes a furnace (12) including a combustion zone (18) for combusting coal (34) and air (32) received therein, such that flue gases (46) formed during the combustion process contain carbon and elemental mercury, a convective pass (50) coupled in flow communication to the furnace, the convective pass is configured to channel the flue gases therethrough, a coolant injector (70) coupled to the convective pass, the injector configured to inject coolant into the convective pass to facilitate reducing a temperature of the flue gases, and a sorbent injector (60) coupled to the convective pass, the sorbent injector configured to inject sorbent into the convective pass to facilitate oxidation of mercury.
