An apparatus for the electronic detection of dental caries comprises at least one probe electrode placed in electrical contact with the surface of a patient's tooth, and a second electrode placed in electrical contact with another part of the body of the patient; an alternating electrical current is passed between the probe and the second electrode. The frequency of the alternating current is varied over a predetermined frequency range and the electrical impedance between the electrodes is measured for a number of frequency values within the range. A variety of probe designs to suite different types of teeth and different tooth surfaces generally comprise an insulating substrate of hydrophobic material, such as Goretex, and one or more electrodes, preferably of a conductive, hydrophobic material such as carbon-impregnated Goretex.
