Abstract of the Disclosure The invention provides a method and apparatus for the production of Mg or Ca by the carbon reduction of their oxides. In the method, Mg (or Ca) vapour and CO forming a mixed gas produced by the carbon reduction are kept at a temperature which does not allow the reaction thereof to form MgO (or CaO) and C. The mixed gas is passed through a divergent nozzle operated under the condition of underexpansion. The gas is thus allowed to expand adiabatically at a speed exceeding the molecular motion speeds of the constituent gases, thereby causing the mixed gas to cool down instantaneously to a tem- perature at which the constituent gases cannot react with each other.
