Methods and apparatus for wireless communications in regional networks, e.g., ad hoc peer to peer networks, are described. Wireless communications devices transmit and monitor for presence indicator signals broadcast from other peer communications devices in its local vicinity. A wireless communications device maintains a list of discovered devices in its vicinity. A first wireless communications device transmits a paging signal directly over an airlink to a second communications device, which is on its list and to which it desires to send data units, e.g., user data in a peer to peer traffic segment. In response to a received paging response signal from the second device, the first device transmits data units, intended for the second device, to a third device, which acts as an intermediary node. The power level for the data unit signal is controlled to be lower than the power level used for the paging signal.
L'invention concerne des procédés et appareils de communications sans fil dans des réseaux régionaux, p. ex. des réseaux de systèmes homologues ad hoc. Les dispositifs de communications sans fil émettent et contrôlent la présence de signaux indicateurs diffusés par d'autres dispositifs de communications homologues dans leur voisinage local. Un dispositif de communications sans fil tient à jour une liste des dispositifs découverts dans son voisinage. Un premier dispositif de communications sans fil émet un signal d'appel de personne directement sur les ondes vers un second dispositif de communications, lequel se trouve sur sa liste et auquel il souhaite envoyer des unités de données, p. ex. des données d'utilisateur dans un segment de trafic entre homologues. En réponse à un signal de réponse à l'appel de personne reçu du deuxième dispositif, le premier dispositif transmet les unités de données, destinées au second dispositif, à un troisième dispositif, lequel sert de nud intermédiaire. Le niveau de puissance du signal d'unité de données est commandé pour être inférieur au niveau de puissance utilisé pour le signal d'appel de personne.
