The present invention relates to a arrangement and method for providing an optical thulium doped fiber amplifier utilizing a dual wavelength pumping scheme for amplifying an optical signal. The method according to the invention comprising the steps of: a first deposition (a) of energy into the fiber amplifier by pumping with radiation of a first wavelength; and a second deposition (b) of energy into the fiber amplifier by pumping with radiation of a second wavelength. The radiation of the first wavelength is arranged to induce, by single photon absorption, a population to the 3H4#191 level of the thulium dopant, and the radiation of the second wavelength primarily depopulates the 3F4#191 level, by excited absorption of a single photon, preferably by strong excited state absorption to the 3F2#191 level. The steps gives a population inversion between the 3H4#191 and the 3F4#191 levels and facilitate a power efficient high gain amplification.

L'invention concerne un agencement et un procédé permettant de produire un amplificateur à fibre optique dopé au thulium au moyen d'un schéma de pompage à double longueur d'onde pour amplifier un signal optique. Ledit procédé consiste en une première déposition (a) d'énergie dans l'amplificateur à fibre par pompage avec rayonnement d'une première longueur d'onde; et en une seconde déposition (b) d'énergie dans l'amplificateur à fibre par pompage avec rayonnement d'une seconde longueur d'onde. Le rayonnement de la première longueur d'onde est destiné à induire, par absorption à un photon, une population au niveau ?3¿H¿4? du thulium dopant, et le rayonnement de la seconde longueur d'onde déconcentre principalement le niveau ?3¿F¿4?, par absorption excitée d'un photon, de préférence par forte absorption à l'état excité du niveau ?3¿F¿2?. On obtient ainsi une inversion de population entre les niveaux ?3¿H¿4? et ?3¿F¿4?, ce qui facilite une amplification à niveau de gain élevé à puissance efficace.? ¿
