The present invention includes a method for stimulating hair growth in a mammal. The method includes providing exogenous pigment epithelium derived growth factor to cells associated with the skin of a mammal under conditions sufficient to stimulate hair growth. The present invention also includes use of an effective amount of exogenous pigment epithelium derived growth factor which is suitable for application to endothelial cells associated with the skin of the mammal. The present invention also includes use of an effective amount of pigment epithelium derived growth factor in the manufacture of a medicament to stimulate hair growth in a mammal.
