Oligomeric ligands, such as cysteine knot growth factors, can be displayed on the surface of viral particles as recombinant fusion proteins. The recombinant fusion proteins can be used to screen for drugs which will inhibit binding of an oligomeric ligand to its receptor and for targeting transferable labels, including therapeutic gene products, to cells bearing a receptor specific for the oligomeric ligand.
