It is shown here that hedgehog polypeptides possess novel activities beyond phenotype specification. Using cultures derived from the embryonic day 14.5 (E14.5) rat ventral mesencephalon, we show that hedgehog is also trophic for dopaminergic neurons and other neurons which are sensitive to exotoxicity.

L'invention concerne de nouvelles activités de polypeptides hedgehog non spécifiées par le phénotype. A l'aide de cultures obtenues à partir de mésencéphale antérieur de rat à 14,5 jours de développement embryonnaire (E14,5), on démontre que hedgehog est également trophique à l'égard de neurones dopaminergiques et d'autres neurones sensibles à une exotoxicité.
