An improved access node and methods for adding data to a serial stream are disclosed. The node has a network input and output, and preferably forms part of a communications node that is interconnected in a communications ring of like communications node. At the access node, data is added to an output stream that includes data within an input stream, when at least one potentially unused digit is detected within the output stream and until data within the input stream is again detected. Preferably, a pass-trough buffer forming part of the access node is used to detect the presence of a potentially unused digit within the output stream. The pass- through buffer passes data received from the ring back onto the ring. The absence of data within the pass-through buffer indicates a potentially unused digit within the output stream. Preferably, any in-progress packet is completely added to the output stream. At the same time, data within the input stream is buffered. Thus, capacity of the data stream may be shared by interconnected nodes. Moreover, data within the stream is typically not delayed by more than the duration of a single packet. Methods of broadcasting packets using a communications node are also disclosed.
