A method is effective for prophylactically treating discs and facet joints near a spinal section that requires surgery. The method comprises the steps of performing a surgical procedure on a section of a spine, and reinforcing a disc or a facet joint adjacent to the surgically treated area with an effective amount of an injected, in situ curable biocompatible matrix or biocompatible polymeric compound. The procedure delays or prevents the development of permanent or irreversible degenerative changes in the treated disc and/or facet joint, thus offering the spinal surgery patient a higher probability of long-term success for arresting disc and facet joint degeneration and prevention of latent adjacent disc/facet joint problems.
L'invention concerne un procédé qui est efficace pour traiter de manière prophylactique des disques et des articulations à facette à proximité d'une section spinale qui nécessite une chirurgie. Le procédé comprend les étapes consistant à réaliser une procédure chirurgicale sur une section d'une colonne vertébrale, et à renforcer un disque ou une articulation à facette adjacent(e) à la zone traitée chirurgicalement avec une quantité efficace d'une matrice biocompatible ou d'un composé polymérique biocompatible pouvant durcir in situ. Le procédé retarde ou empêche le développement de changement de dégénérescence permanents ou irréversibles dans le disque et/ou l'articulation à facette traité(e), en offrant aussi au patient ayant subi une chirurgie de la colonne vertébrale une plus forte probabilité d'un succès à long terme d'arrêt de dégénérescence de disque et d'articulation à facette, et d'empêchement de problème de disque/d'articulation à facette adjacents latents.
