The current invention provides a method for rapid testing of stress tolerance in a plant and a method of producing plants with enhanced stress tolerance, in particular cold and/or drought tolerance. Such a method may be applied in breeding and selection programs for this trait, or for determining the timing of induction of stress and cold tolerance or hardening of a plant, for instance for agricultural purposes. The current invention exploits a difference in the temperature and light regimen induced transcriptional regulation of several types of dehydrins, in order to determine a ratio of dehydrin types that is indicative of cold and/or drought tolerance, induction of hardening and dormancy in a plant.

L'invention concerne un procédé d'essai rapide de la tolérance au stress chez les plantes, ainsi qu'un procédé de production de plantes présentant une tolérance au stress renforcée, notamment au froid et/ou à la sécheresse. Un tel procédé peut être appliqué dans des programmes d'amélioration et de sélection à ce niveau, ou pour déterminer la synchronisation de l'induction de la tolérance au stress et au froid ou le durcissement d'une plante, par exemple à des fins agricoles. L'invention concerne une différence au niveau de la régulation transcriptionnelle induite du régime de température et de lumière de plusieurs types de déhydrines, afin de déterminer un taux de types de déhydrines représentatif de la tolérance au froid et/ou à la sécheresse, l'induction du durcissement et la latence chez une plante.
