Novel probes are provided for determining the es nucleoside transporter sites of animal cells, including human cells. Methods of preparing these probes and methods of using them to determine the es nucleoside transporter are also provided. The probe is preferably comprised of a compound having the general formula: Image wherein n is 1 - 12; R7 is H, halogen, NH2, OH, OCH3, O(CH2)n CH3 (where n is 1 - 12), SH, SR (where R is CH3 or (CH2)n CH3 and n is 1 to 12); A is NH, S, 0, Se; X is N or C; Y is N or C; Z is N or C; R2 is C 1 to C20 substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or heteroalkyl; C1 to C20 substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic carbocycle or heterocycle; C1 to C20 substituted or unsubstituted arene or heteroarene, aryl or substituted aryl; C1 to C20 heteroaryl or substituted heteroaryl with the proviso that R2 is not methyl; R3 is H, halogen, NO2 (nitro), N3 (azido), SH, SR (where R is CH3 or (CH2)n CH3 and n is 1 to 12) when Y is C and R3 is absent when Y is N; R4 is H, OH or halogen when n is 1 to 12; R5 is H, OH, halogen, N3 (azido), acetal, or hemiacetal when n is 1 to 12; R6 is H, -CO-NH2 or -C=N when X is C and R6 is absent when X is N and R1 is a reporter moiety or a reporter moiety and a linker moiety.
