Methods and systems for the provision of streaming media content in existing video delivery systems are provided. Streaming media content may be delivered over an existing video delivery system by (1) downloading a streaming media player to a consumer device and processing the streaming media content for delivery over the existing delivery network for decoding and display by the player; and/or (2) transcoding the streaming media content for display on a consumer device and delivering the transcoded streaming media content over the existing delivery network to the consumer device. Processing of the streaming media content may comprise encapsulating the streaming media content in an MPEG-2 transport stream for delivery over the existing network. Transcoding of the streaming media content may comprise converting the content from an original format to another format compatible with the consumer device and/or a player resident at the consumer device, such as an MPEG-2 program stream. Various hybrid systems using features of both types of delivery methods may be developed and implemented in accordance with the invention.
Cette invention se rapporte à des procédés et à des systèmes servant à fournir des contenus multimédia en continu dans des systèmes de distribution vidéo existants. On peut distribuer un contenu multimédia en continu sur un système de distribution de vidéo existant: (1) en téléchargeant un lecteur multimédia en continu dans un dispositif de consommateur et en traitant ce contenu multimédia en continu en vue de sa distribution sur le réseau de distribution existant, pour un décodage et un affichage par le lecteur; et/ou (2) en transcodant le contenu multimédia en continu en vue de son affichage sur le dispositif de consommateur et en distribuant le contenu multimédia en continu ainsi transcodé sur le réseau de distribution existant jusqu'au dispositif de consommateur. Le traitement du contenu multimédia en continu peut consister à encapsuler le contenu multimédia en continu dans un flux de transport MPEG-2 en vue de sa distribution sur le réseau existant. Le transcodage du contenu multimédia en continu peut consister à convertir ce contenu d'un format d'origine à un autre format compatible avec le dispositif de consommateur et/ou avec un lecteur résident dans le dispositif de consommateur, tel qu'un flux de programme MPEG-2. Divers systèmes hybrides utilisant des caractéristiques des deux types de procédés de distribution peuvent être élaborés et mis en oeuvre selon cette invention.
