A system (200) and method for cathodic protection having a metallic housing (202), a backplane (224) situated within the metallic housing (202), a cathodic protection card (228) coupled to the backplane (224) and a permanent anode (204), external to the metallic housing (202), coupled to the cathodic protection card (228) through an isolated port (222) is disclosed. The cathodic protection system (200) is powered using span power and the permanent anode (204) and metallic housing (202) are adapted to form a closed circuit when both come in contact with an electrolyte (212). The permanent anode (204) is maintained at a higher potential than the metallic housing (202).
