Disclosed are a method for monitoring a usage by a consumer of a utility service, computer readable medium having instructions encoded thereon for carrying out the method, a carrier wave embodying a computer data signal comprising code segments for directing a programmable device to carry out the method, and an apparatus for carrying out the method. The method comprises producing in a control system at a consumer site a measurement of usage of the utility service at the consumer site; and transmitting the measurement from the control system to a remote location for monitoring the usage by the consumer of the utility service.
