The invention provides methods for de- tecting calpain activation by measuring levels of calpain-generated spectrin BDPs using anti- bodies that specifically bind to these spectrin BDPs, but not intact spectrin, or spectrin BDPs generated by other proteases. Also included in the invention are kits for diagnosing diseases associated with increased levels of calpain acti- vation, and methods for screening for effective therapeutics for these diseases.

L'invention concerne des méthodes pour détecter l'activation de la calpaïne, consistant à mesurer les niveaux des produits de dégradation de la spectrine produits par la calpaïne, en utilisant des anticorps qui se fixent spécifiquement à ces produits de dégradation de la spectrine, mais pas à la spectrine intacte, ni aux produits de dégradation de la spectrine produits par d'autres protéases. L'invention concerne également des coffrets pour diagnostiquer des maladies associées à une activation trop élevée de la calpaïne, ainsi que des méthodes pour effectuer une évaluation préliminaire des médicaments qui pourraient être utiles pour le traitement de ces maladies.
