A method and apparatus for determining formation slowness around a borehole are provided. The Fresnel volume concept is applied for traveltime tomography. The Fresnel volume represents a sonic wave propagation path about the borehole. The application of Fresnel volume to sonic data provides for a stable inversion and makes practical 3-D tomography. Inversion is accomplished by an iterative back-projection method.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif permettant de déterminer la lenteur associée à une formation autour d'un trou de forage. Ce procédé consiste à appliquer le concept des volumes de Fresnel à une tomographie des temps de trajet. Le volume de Fresnel représente le trajet de propagation d'une onde acoustique autour du trou de forage. L'application des volumes de Fresnel aux ondes acoustique permet d'obtenir une inversion stable et offre une procédé pratique de tomographie en 3-D. L'inversion est réalisée au moyen d'une méthode de rétroprojection itérative.
