The invention relates to diagnostic methods for determining the genotoxic state or phenotype of a specimen by analyzing its nuclear DNA through spectral analysis. In combination with the discovery that there is a non-random progression of structural alterations of nuclear DNA from a healthy or non-genotoxic state to a carcinomicstate and further to a metastatic state (both genotoxic states), a comparison between a specimens' nuclear DNA obtained by spectral analysis to a reference spectra will yield a state genotoxic state determination based upon a specimen's nuclear DNA phenotype, irrespective of histological evidence of neoplasia or other aberrant cellular reproduction such as cancer or metastasis.
