ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and composition for dewatering coal and mineral slurries by centrifugation or filtration wherein a dewatering aid in combination with a clay dispersant is added to the slurry prior to centrifugation. The dewatering aid is preferably an alkylphenolethoxylate surfactant and the clay dispersant is preferably sodium hexametaphosphate. The combination aids in dewatering and also reduces the ash content of coal treated with the combination.
