The invention provides, in part, an industrial process comprising the manipulation of residual solutions or slurries coming from the lixiviation process of minerals containing metals and cyanide, which is absorbed through a chemical reaction in cyanide absorption towers. The chemical reaction for the absorption of cyanide uses compositions including iron oxides and hydroxides and mixtures thereof as filling material, placed within the absorption towers. The invented method chemically comprises of the reaction of the cyanide ion with said selected compositions in order to produce ferricyanides or ferrocyanides. The cyanide may be chemically eliminated from the water that drags it through the formation of stable complexes.
