The present invention identifies genes and proteins of the ubiquitinylation pathway in humans and in various animal models whose expression patterns are altered when a heart tissue develops cardiomyopathy. The genes identified may be used as markers for the disease onset and progression. The present invention provides methods to screen agents that are capable of modulating the progress of cardiomyopathy. The present invention also provides methods of identifying therapeutic compounds that can treat various cardiomyopathies by analyzing the expression of one or more of the genes and proteins identified.
