2089001 9203129 PCTABS00010 The present invention provides methods and compositions for inducing differentiation of cells. Compositions having formula (I) wherein R1 is C1 to about C20 alkyl or alkenyl; R2 is hydroxyl, alkoxy or H, R3 is H or lower alkyl; R4 is COR5, SO2R5, or CSR5, where R5 is C1 to C20 alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl, which may be substituted by one or more of the following functional groups: OH, SH, OR6, SR6, NR7R8, COOR9, and CONR10R8, where R6, R7, R8, R9, and R10 independently are H, alkyl, aryl, alkaryl and arylalkyl using up to about 10 carbons, are administered to cells of a mammal that are capable of undergoing differentiation in amounts effective to induce differentiation of the cells. The invention also provides methods and compositions for altering the phenotype of cells and for treating diseases characterized by hyperproliferation of cells.
