The present invention is directed to precipitation polymerization processes for the manufacture of essentially non-crosslinked polymers prepared from N-vinyl acetamide monomer which exhibit reduced levels of residual non-polymerizable contaminants, particularly residual acetamide, the processes including the steps of contacting the N-vinyl acetamide monomer with a polymerization medium containing a diluent selected from ethyl acetate and acetone and a free-radical initiator, under conditions effective to polymerize the N-vinyl acetamide monomer, thereby forming a precipitate of the polymer in the polymerization medium; and isolating the precipitated polymer from the polymerization medium.

La présente invention porte sur des méthodes de polymérisation par précipitation pour la production de polymères principalement non réticulés, préparés à partir d'un monomère de N-vinylacétamide et renfermant des teneurs réduites en contaminants résiduels non polymérisables, particulièrement en acétamide résiduel; les méthodes consistent notamment à mettre en contact le monomère de N-vinylacétamide avec un milieu de polymérisation renfermant un diluant choisi parmi l'acétate d'éthyle et l'acétone, ainsi qu'un initiateur de radicaux libres, dans des conditions favorisant la polymérisation du monomère de N-vinylacétamide; cela a comme effet de former un précipité du polymère dans le milieu de polymérisation, précipité qui est ensuite isolé du milieu de polymérisation.
