A method for determining a location of a lost circulation zone in a wellbore having a first wellbore fluid therein that includes allowing loss of the first wellbore fluid to the lost circulation zone to stabilize; adding a volume of a second wellbore fluid having a density less than the first wellbore fluid to the wellbore on top of the first wellbore fluid to a predetermined wellbore depth; determining an average density of the combined first wellbore fluid and second wellbore fluid; mixing the first wellbore fluid and the second wellbore fluid together; pumping a volume of a third wellbore fluid having a density greater the average density of the combined first and second wellbore fluid into the wellbore bottom until fluid loss occurs; and determining the location of the lost circulation zone is disclosed. L'invention divulgue un procédé pour déterminer la position d'une zone de perte de circulation dans un trou de forage contenant un premier fluide de forage, comprenant les étapes suivantes: laisser la perte du premier fluide de forage dans la zone de perte de circulation se stabiliser; ajouter dans le puits de forage, au-dessus du premier fluide de forage, un volume d'un deuxième fluide de forage dont la densité est inférieure à celle du premier fluide de forage à une profondeur de puits de forage prédéterminée; déterminer une densité moyenne des premier et deuxième fluides de forage combinés; mélanger le premier fluide de forage et le deuxième fluide de forage ensemble; pomper un volume d'un troisième fluide de forage dont la densité est supérieure à la densité moyenne des premier et deuxième fluides de forage combinés dans le fond du puits de forage jusqu'à ce qu'il se produise une perte de fluide; et déterminer la position de la zone de perte de circulation.
