Plant stresses such as pest drought, and excessive temperatures can lead to significant losses of crops each year. There is a continuing need to develop novel plant varieties that are less susceptible to damage or loss by such stresses. The present invention provides a system and method for generating plants having an increased resistance to plant stresses such as drought or adverse temperatures. Transgenic plants expressing a phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) gene can show an unexpected and dramatic improvement in their capacity to tolerate a variety of stress conditions. Moreover, increased PI-PLC expression can further lead to marked increase in plant growth rates, maturation, and lipid content. The present invention encompasses transgenic plants having modifications with regard to PI-PLC pathways, such as altered PI-PLC levels, and plant products thereof.

Les stress que subissent les plantes tels que parasites, sécheresse et températures excessives peuvent entraîner chaque année des pertes importantes en ce qui concerne les récoltes, c'est pourquoi on s'efforce de mettre au point de nouvelles variétés de plantes moins sujettes aux stress provoquant de tels dommages ou pertes. Cette invention concerne un système et un procédé visant à produire des plantes possédant une résistance accrue aux stress tels que sécheresse ou températures défavorables. Les plantes transgéniques exprimant un gène de phospholipase C spécifique de phosphoinositide (PI-PLC) ont une aptitude considérablement améliorée et inattendue à tolérer diverses conditions de stress. De plus, l'expression accrue PI-PLC peut aussi accroître notablement la vitesse de croissance, la maturation et la teneur en lipides des plantes. L'invention concerne des plantes transgéniques présentant des modifications quant aux voies de signalisation PI-PLC, p. ex. taux modifiés de PI-PLC, et les produits végétaux associés.
