The invention provides methods of inhibiting A.beta.-induced neuronal cell death. The invention further provides methods of providing neuroprotection to a subject and methods of treating a disease state characterized by A.beta.- induced neuronal cell death in a subject. Methods of inhibiting p75 receptor mediated neuronal cell death, as well as methods of treating a disease state in a subject characterized by p75 receptor mediated neuronal cell death are provided.
