A method for monitoring the sulfonyl fluoride functional group content of a material in order to determine the degree of conversion of said sulfonyl fluoride functional groups into other functional groups; said method comprising measuring the absorbance of electromagnetic radiation transmitted through the material, said electromagnetic radiation being of an intensity and frequency such that it is at least partially, but not entirely, absorbed by the sulfonyl fluoride functional groups within the material.
