Compression and decompression methods for transmitting facsimile images in which the facsimile image is compressed in both vertical and horizontal directions are implemented using two dimensional maximum differences algorithms. Asymmetrical and fractional image compression are provided by controlling the number of lines, i.e., rows or columns, being compressed and by controlling the bit segment length used during each differences determination. The compressed facsimile image is decompressed by selecting a reference bit in the decompressed facsimile image and expanding the bit in both vertical and horizontal directions in accordance with a binary value of bits near the selected reference bit. A transmission channel adapted to serially perform the encoding and decoding functions is also described.

Procédés de compression et de décompression pour la transmission d'images de facsimile, selon lesquels l'image de facsimile est comprimée à la fois dans les directions horizontale et verticale à l'aide d'algorithmes de différences maximales de deux dimensions. On obtient la compression asymétrique et fractionnaire d'images en régulant le nombre de lignes, c'est-à-dire de rangées et de colonnes, comprimées et en régulant la longueur de segment binaire utilisée pendant chaque détermination de différences. Pour la décompression de l'image de facsimile comprimée, un bit de référence est choisi dans l'image facsimile décomprimée et ledit bit est étendu dans les directions verticale et horizontale conformément à une valeur binaire de bits proche du bit de référence sélectionné. Un canal de transmission adapté pour effectuer en série les fonctions de codage et de décodage est également décrit.
