METHODS FOR PREPARATION OF OVERLAID METAL LAYERS ABSTRACT Methods for preparation of overlaid uniform metal layers of prescribed compositions and thicknesses bonded tightly to the substrate metals. The methods consist of previous coating the substrate metal surface with metal layers and irradiation treatment by high energy density beams. The irradiation treatment by the high energy density beams including laser and electron beams is carried out for the specimen surfaces of the metal layer-covered sub- strates during movement of the specimens or beams. The movement controls the time of irradiation to individual surface site and the depth of the melt and hence controls the melt alloy composition. When the substrate surfaces are previously coated with metal layers formed by various procedures including metal powder coating and various kinds of depositions, irradiation by the high energy density beams is carried out for melting not only the metal layers but also a portion of substrate metals. This provides tight bonding between the metal layers and the substrate metals and hence the formation of overlaid uniform alloy layers. When heat treatment is carried out to bond the above-mentioned metal layers or other metal sheets of the prescribed compositions to the substrate metals prior to the beam irradiation, it is not always necessary that the irradiation treatment by the high energy density beams melts a portion of the substrate metals along with the metal layers or the metal sheets unless alloying of the metal layers or metal sheets with the substrate metals is required. The substrate metals can be previously covered with a metal or metals capable of bonding easily to both the substrate metals and the metal sheets or metal layers by previous heat treatment.
