This inventio provides method of preventing mucositis in a subject susceptible to mucositis comprising administering to the subject a prophylactically effective amount of granulocyte colony stimulating factor or a polypeptide analog thereof having substantially the same amino acid sequence and the activity of naturally occurring granulocyte colony stimulating factor. This invention further provides a method of treating mucositis in a subject having mucositis comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of granulocyte colony stimulating factor or a polypeptide analog thereof having substantially the same amino acid sequence and the activity of naturally occurring granulocyte colony stimulating factor.
