Flattening steel strip by cold rolling through at least two cold rolling mill stands, where a first of the mill stands has its work rolls having local rigidity K significantly different from those of a second of the mill stands. The local rigidity K is calculated in Kgf/mm/mm by the equation (see formula I) where p=roll force per unit strip width (Kgf/mm), u=local work roll flattening (mm), D=work roll diameter (mm), E=work roll elastic modulus (Kgf/mm2), .upsilon.=poisson's ratio, .DELTA.h=local draft of the strip (mm), where (see formula II) and (see formula III).
