A zeolite having a high silica-to-alumina ratio is heated to about 400~C to remove physically adsorbed water, followed by heating to in excess of about 650~C, to form a superheated dehydroxylated zeolite. The zeolite is used to adsorb trace moisture from a feed gas. The zeolite can also be prepared having a low level of metallic impurities by contacting the zeolite with an acid gas. This zeolite is particularly useful for removing trace metal impurities from acid gases such as hydrogen chloride and hydrogen bromide.

Cette invention concerne un zéolite à rapport silice-alumine élevé que l'on chauffe à environ 400· C pour en faire disparaître l'eau absorbée physiquement, puis à plus de 650· C, pour former un zéolite surchauffé hydroxylé. Le zéolite sert à absorber des traces d'humidité dans un gaz d'alimentation. On peut également préparer un zéolite à faible teneur en impuretés métalliques en y introduisant un gaz acide. Ce zéolite convient particulièrement bien pour l'élimination de traces d'eau et de traces d'impuretés métalliques dans des gaz acides tels que du chlorure d'hydrogène ou du bromure d'hydrogène.
