The invention relates to a process for in- activating viruses in a blood product, which comprises contacting said blood product, which contains labile blood proteins and viruses, with an effective amount of a chemical disinfectant, which does not denature proteins, for a period of time and at a temperature sufficient to inactivate substantially all of the vi- ruses.
