A process is disclosed for the manufacture of compounds of Formula I: (See formula I) wherein R1 is alkyl having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, optionally mono- or di-substituted lower alkyl wherein the alkyl group has 1 to 4 carbon atoms and the substituent is halo, aryloxy, alkoxy or aryl. X is lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or halogen by reacting a compound of Formula II: (See formula II) wherein R1 is as described above; X is as described above with triethyl orthopropionate; or alternatively by reacting an acid addition salt of the compound of Formula II with triethyl orthopropionate.
