The role of synaptic adhesion molecules in human cell development and function is largely unknown. This invention provides methods to study ß-cell function in native tissue through the use of novel adhesion and migrations assays. Through the use of these assays, the inventors have been able to for the first time describe the contribution of SAMs to human ß-cell adhesion, spreading, and motility. Furthermore, the inventors have used the results of these assays to develop methods for detection, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to the pancreas.
