The invention relates to methods for treating or preventing diseases that are IL-1 mediated diseases or TNF mediated dis- eases, including arthritis, septic shock, inflammatory bowel disease, ischemia injury, reperfusion injury, pulmonary fibrosis and adult respiratory distress syndrome. The method comprises administering to patients in need thereof therapeutically effective amounts of an IL-1 inhibitor and a TNF inhibitor. In a preferred embodiment, the IL-1 inhibitor is human recombinant IL-1ra and the TNF inhibitor is human recombinant 30kDa TNF inhibitor. The invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions containing an IL-1 inhibitor and a TNF inhibitor useful in such methods.
