ABSTRACT The determination of glucose levels in at least part of a blood sample for use in detecting diabetes in patients or deciding treatment levels is effected by controlling the temperature and pH of the sample adding a colouring agent such as nitro blue tetrazolium and after a first delay taking a first colour measurement then after a second delay taking a further colour measurement and then conforming the colour change with the colour change in a standard solution, the selected colouring agent and pH being such that the glucose in the sample is still reacted associated with an amine group of protein in the blood and when the glucose has undergone a molecular rearrangement and during colour measurement is in the staple fructosamine form.
