Methods of diagnosing risk of pulmonary disease in a mammal with cystic fibrosis are provided comprising screening a biological sample obtained from the mammal for MBL2 or SP-A1 deficient gene mutants, and an over-expressing mutant TGFB1 gene. The presence such mutant genes is indicative of a risk of pulmonary disease.
