The methods include: (a) obtaining a nucleic acid sample from an organism; (b) imaging said nucleic acid; (c) obtaining a restriction map of said nucleic acid; and (d) correlating the restriction map of said nucleic acid with a restriction map database, thereby identifying the organism.
