A method of reducing plastic shrinkage cracking in concrete compositions that includes a) combining 3 -40 volume percent cement, 5 - 50 volume percent fine aggregate, 5 - 50 volume percent coarse aggregate, and 10 - 22 volume percent water to form a concrete mixture; b) during or after (a), adding 1.5 - 40 volume percent of prepuff particles to the concrete mixture to form a concrete composition; c) placing the concrete composition in a form; and d) allowing the concrete to set and harden to form a hardened concrete article substantially free of plastic shrinkage cracking. The prepuff particles have an average particle diameter of from 0.2 mm to 8 mm, a bulk density of from 0.02 g/cc to 0.64 g/cc, an aspect ratio of from 1 to 3. The concrete composition has a density of from about 40 to about 135 lb./ft3.

L'invention porte sur un procédé de réduction de la fissuration par retrait plastique dans des compositions de béton. Ce procédé comprend les opérations consistant à : a) combiner 3 - 40 % en volume de ciment, 5 - 50 % en volume d'agrégats fins, 5 - 50 % en volume d'agrégats grossiers et 10 - 22 % en volume d'eau, afin de former un mélange de béton ; b) pendant ou après l'étape a), ajouter 1,5 - 40 % en volume de particules qui vont gonfler au mélange de béton afin de former une composition de béton ; c) placer la composition de béton dans un coffrage ; et d) laisser le béton prendre et durcir afin de former un article en béton durci sensiblement exempt de fissuration par retrait plastique. Les particules qui vont gonfler ont un diamètre moyen de 0,2 mm à 8 mm, une masse volumique apparente de 0,02 g/cm3 à 0,64 g/cm3, un rapport d'allongement de 1 à 3. La composition de béton à une masse volumique d'environ 40 à environ 135 livres/pied cube.
