Methods are disclosed for refolding proteins of the TGF-.beta. family of proteins. The methods employ as refolding agents one or more compounds which are non-detergent zwitterionic compounds, such as sulfobetaines, substituted pyridines, substituted pyrroles and acid substituted aminocyclohexanes.
