Abstract The Metropolitan Area Distributed Switching Telecommunications Network (MADN) is a radio-based telecommunications overlay network that features: fully digital switching systems, modified for strategic placement in high traffic density urban area office and/or apartment buildings; integrated wireline and wireless subscriber access networks and short-haul digital radio transport facilities. The unique arrangement of switches, individually placed in each building, feature large capacity, powerfill 32-bit microprocessors providing increased call processing and network architecture capacity and flexibility. This distributed environment facilitates adjustments to the processing capacity in proportion to the growing demand, makes for a more efficient network architecture, and enables call processing functions to be performed at the point of application rather than in traditional central offices. This overlay network will work completely independent of the regular Public Switched Telecommunications Network (PSTN), operated by the local telecommunications operator and will offer all subscribers connected to the network a vast range of voice features and services, not always available in the regular traditional network. These networks will be packaged as a unit, easily and quickly deployed in any urban business and residential environment providing switched voice and wideband data services.
