ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for enhancing the viscosity of a polymer solution with certain microorganisms. The intrinsic viscosity of a solution of preformed polymers is increased or stabilized when that solution is subjected to microbial action. The microorganisms employed are incapable of a de novo synthesis of the subject polymers, but are nevertheless capable of increas- ing the solution vicosity. The vicosity is enhanced relative to a solution which does not contain the microorganism.
