2098836 9211343 PCTABS00014 A method for reducing the viscosity of a liquid which contains sulfur heterocycles, in sufficient relative abundance for the physicochemical properties of these molecules to contribute significantly to the viscosity of the liquid. Viscosity is reduced by contacting the liquid with an effective amount of a biocatalytic agent capable of selectively cleaving carbon-sulfur bonds in sulfur heterocycles, thereby converting these molecules into products which no longer confer high viscosity. Biocatalysis is particularly suitable for reducing the viscosity of organic sulfur-containing petroleum liquids, including crude oils and fractions thereof, because the biocatalytic agent employed does not appreciably attack carbon-carbon bonds. Thus, biocatalytic reduction of viscosity does not significantly diminish the fuel value of petroleum liquids.
