A modified water-immiscible solvent useful in the extraction of acetic acid from aqueous streams is a substantially pure mixture of isomers of highly branched di-alkyl amines. This solvent is substantially devoid of mono-alkyl amines and alcohols. Solvent mixtures formed of such a modified solvent with a desired cosolvent, preferably a low boiling hydrocarbon which forms an azeotrope with water are useful in the extraction of acetic acid from aqueous gaseous streams. An anaerobic microbial fermentation process for the production of acetic acid employs such solvents, under conditions which limit amide formation by the solvent and thus increase the efficiency of acetic acid recovery. Methods for the direct extraction of acetic acid and the extractive fermentation of acetic acid also employ the modified solvents and increase efficiency of acetic acid production. Such increases in efficiency are also obtained where the energy source for the microbial fermentation contains carbon dioxide and the method includes a carbon dioxide stripping step prior to extraction of acetic acid in solvent.
Un solvant modifié miscible avec l'eau utilisé pour extraire l'acide acétique des courants aqueux est constitué d'un mélange pratiquement pure d'isomères di-alkyle amines très ramifiés. Ce solvant est pratiquement exempt de mono-alkyle amines et d'alcool. Les mélanges de solvants contenant un tel solvant modifié en plus d'un solvant souhaité, de préférence un hydrocarbure à point d'ébullition bas qui forme un azéotrope avec l'eau, sont utilisés dans l'extraction de l'acide acétique des courants gazeux aqueux. Par ailleurs, un processus de fermentation microbienne anaérobie utilisé pour produire de l'acide acétique, emploie de tels solvants dans des conditions qui limitent la formation d'amide par le solvant, et augmente ainsi l'efficacité de l'opération de récupération d'acide acétique. En outre, les procédés d'extraction directe d'acide acétique et de fermentation extractive d'acide acétique utilisent également ces solvant modifiés et augmentent l'efficacité de production d'acide acétique. Cette efficacité accrue est possible lorsque la source d'énergie utilisée pour la fermentation microbienne contient du gaz carbonique, ce procédé comprenant une étape d'extraction de gaz carbonique précédant l'extraction de l'acide acétique dans le solvant.
