MICROBIALLY ACTIVATED NITROGEN FERTILIZER ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A microbially activated nitrogen fertilizer compos- ition comprising particulate melamine combined in direct contact with telluric microbes which have an ability to hy- drolyze melamine to plant food nitrogen in soil is described. The melamine and telluric microbes are combined to form che- mically neutral fertilizer particles containing between zero and 7 percent water. The combined particles contain suf- ficient telluric microbes to hydrolyze the melamine to plant food nitrogen in soil at rates which are useful to growing plants. Controlled-release of plant food nitrogen is pro- vided by controlling the amount of telluric microbes in con- tact with the melamine. A method of preparing a microbially activated nitrogen fertilizer and a method of fertilizing soil with fertilizer are also described.
