ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A novel strain of microorganism capable of growing with pyrazine as the sole carbon, nitrogen and energy source is disclosed. These microorganisms hydroxylate pyrazine derivatives of general formula: Image (I) wherein R1 represents a hydrogen or halogen atom and R2 and R3 each represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, to form hydroxylated pyrazine derivatives of general formula: Image (II) and the latter are accumulated in the growth medium. A process for the production of hydroxylated pyrazine derivatives is also disclosed.
