Disclosed is an elongate flexible microcatheter (10) for diagnostic and/or therapeutic applications. The microcatheter is provided with a small outside diameter and high degree of flexibility to facilitate negotiation of small, tortuous vessels such as those encountered in intercranial catheterization. The catheter is formed from a composite of a series of tubular elements (30), each extending axially for a different distance along the tubular body. A distal section (32) on one or more of the tubular components is provided with a spiral cut, to modify the flexibility properties of the finished catheter. The catheter may also be provided with an iflatable balloon (112), and a valve (126) to permit the use of a single lumen (120) for both receiving a guidewire and for conveying inflation media.

L'invention concerne un microcathéter (10) flexible, de forme allongée, utilisé à des fins diagnostiques et/ou thérapeutiques. Ledit microcathéter est pourvu d'un petit diamètre intérieur et d'un haut degré de flexibilité qui permettent sa progression dans de petits vaisseaux tortueux tels que ceux dans lesquels ils doivent pénétrer lors d'un cathétérisme intracrânien. Le cathéter est constitué d'un ensemble d'éléments tubulaires (30) s'étendant chacun dans le sens axial sur une distance différente, le long du corps tubulaire. Une section distale (32) d'au moins un des composants tubulaires est pourvue d'une incision hélicoïdale qui modifie les caractéristiques de flexibilité du cathéter à l'état fini. Le cathéter peut également être pourvu d'un ballonnet (112) gonflable, et d'une valve (126) qui permet l'utilisation d'une seule lumière (120) pour à la fois introduire un fil guide et faire passer le fluide de gonflage.
